How to Find & Keep Readers

Where does a writer find sound ways to bring people under the umbrella of a reader . . . and a friend?

We writers can become so involved with our stories that we may forget we’re writing for readers—not agents, editors, marketing and promotion types, or sales staff.

    Entertainment is our aim,
    And writing is our game.

There are 7.9 billion people in this world. We will never meet each person, but through our writing and social media, we have an opportunity to contact many of them and make a friend from anywhere. How amazing to reach others with a well-written story—to give and not to take. That’s a challenge, and one I welcome.

Where does a writer find sound ways to bring people under the umbrella of a reader . . . and a friend?

A professional writer:

Knows why they are writing.
•    Some write to satisfy a longing to create a story.
•    Some long to master the art of communicating through the written word.
•    Some desire to relay deep moral truths through an unpredictable plot and realistic characters.
•    Some write to simply entertain the reader.
•    Some venture to write what they’ve never done before.
•    Some create for multiple reasons.

Knows their genre.
Understanding the right literary category opens the door to creating a powerful novel and finding readers who enjoy that type of story.

Knows the various social media platforms and where their readers hang out.
Professional writers spend time discovering all social media has to offer. Readers fall into various demographics according to age, culture, goals, wants, needs, gender, and personal preferences. Professional writers find the venue that best suits their audience and type of writing. They share content that reflects their personality and their unique voice.

Knows that using easy-to-read language eliminates sending the readers to the dictionary.
Professional writers have a goal to entertain, inspire, and encourage. Those aspirations meet readers where they are.

Knows the value of sensory expression.
Professional writers study the five senses to ensure readers experience an unforgettable adventure.

Knows where their readers dine, shop, vacation, and live.
Professional writers discover how to appeal to readers through their day-to-day activities.

Knows transparency is vital.
These writers are real and caring. They understand the boundaries of sharing empathy in making lasting connections.

Knows the value of speaking to large and small groups.
Writers who are passionate and equipped for speaking believe in their message and share it with others.

Knows the wisdom of reading.
•    Read in their genre.
•    Read reputable blog posts about the publishing world.
•    Read the bestsellers.
•    Read books about the craft and social media.

Knows the gift of writing can touch a few or thousands of readers.
Professional writers make the effort to reach others with a special message.

Knows how to nurture their readers with a conscious Dear Reader attitude.
•    My goal is to build a friendship with you. I care about you, and I’m constantly working to answer your questions, inform, and entertain you.
•    My passion for my stories comes from a deep desire to provide a great book for you. Your encouragement is why I work hard to develop strong characters and an intricate plot.
•    You can trust me to stand firm on my brand. I’m a writer who is true to my promises. My books, blogs, and social media posts reflect my integrity.
•    You are important to me. My multiple daily posts are about how I can meet your needs. My promise to keep in touch is reliable. Leave comments, and I will respond.
•    Your input helps me be productive. I’m listening to your suggestions, questions, and advice.
•    We’re a team. No writer is ever alone. We need each other to walk this path called life.
•    What stories have influenced you? How can I best continue to serve you?
