The latest Texas bookstore openings and updates from around the state

 

BAY CITY

A new mobile bookshop in Bay City, Texas, Clem & Rosie’s Mobile Bookery, opened its doors on June 25th. Moving around to different locations around the Bay City Area, they’re bringing books to all parts of the community in a too-cute trailer.

 

BRIAN

Whimsy & Wild Emporium has opened at 214 N. Main St. in Bryan, Texas. KBTX reported that the downtown area "just got a little more whimsical" with a shop that "isn't just your average children's bookstore. Owners Maggie Ruiz and Lindsey Terry say that this is a place where kids can actually put themselves in the story they're reading.

In addition to books and toys, Whimsy & Wild Emporium features various places for photo opportunities, including a chest that resembles the wardrobe in the Chronicles of Narnia; a display from a scene in Harry Potter; and a party room where kids can choose from themes such as Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland and others.

Whimsy & Wild Emporium will also offer tutoring and music lessons, along with weekly summer camps and Story Time-Music Time.

 

LOCKHART

 

Best Little Wine & Books opened recently in the “BBQ Capital of Texas” with over 150 different wine selections, a great book collection, and a view of the downtown square.

 

The space is on the smaller side, but owner Kaye Askins says, “Locals and visitors can purchase bottles to go, to enjoy in the shop or purchase and peruse books about wine, food, and cocktails in the shop's cozy book nook.” You can peruse their wine selections online, as well as read up on Askins’ dog, Chicken’s, recommendations for the month.

 

 

HOUSTON

Basket Books and Art is an independent community bookstore and art gallery in east Montrose specializing in “contemporary art, literature, and thought.”

They also offer select general interest titles as well as art objects and paper goods. 

Their programming and offerings “provide a space for creative and intellectual exchange among Houston’s diverse arts & intellectual communities.”

 

PFLUGERVILLE

 

The Book Burrow, which has operated as a pop-up bookstore frequenting the Pflugerville Pfarmers Market and The Three Legged Goat, now has a brick & mortar location at 2401 W. Pecan, Pflugerville, TX. Their grand opening celebration will be on August 6th.

 

SEGUIN

Pecantown Books and Brews, a general-interest bookstore with a full-service cafe and bar, opened in early June in downtown Seguin, Texas, in a historic arts-and-crafts bungalow dating back to the 1940s. 

Store owner Tess Coody-Anders and her husband, Keith Anders, carry new titles for all ages, with books in Spanish and English and a particular focus on Texana local and regional history. The shop has a "really beautiful" room devoted to young reader titles, from picture books through YA, and for adult books, there is a strong emphasis on literary fiction, especially work from lesser-known or debut authors.

 

NEW-TO-US BOOKSTORES

DUNCANVILLE

Opened in 2019, Black & Bitter Coffee and Books serves coffee, espresso, and books deep in the heart of Duncanville, Texas.

They host events like Poetry on the Patio nights the last Friday of every month and a local arts and music vendors pop-up on the first Friday of every month.

 

SHERTZ

Crazy Lady Used Books & Emporium is a used bookstore highlighting their nonfiction, Texana, military, American & world history, and alternative religion collections.
